Edge City offers classes from beginner to advanced woodworkers. We specialize in small group classes, wood turning classes and shared woodworking space. We are an inclusive community of learners with a range of skills.

Shop Details

Classes

  • Most classes range between 6 and 27 hours, over several evenings

  • Maximum capacity per class is 5 students

  • We have plenty of hand tools to share, but encourage students to bring their own tools (chisels, handplanes) for maintenance hints

Pathways

For a student at Edge City, we recommend following a skills development approach that suits their long-term desires. Our courses are programmed for project work that enhances different sets of skills each time.

Small Box Making

Our beginners woodworking classes offer Box Making or Cutting Boards as a starting point for beginners. These sessions offer a foundation in woodworking machine safety and success with basic hand-tools.

Beyond Basics

intermediate workshop training & small projects

Once a beginners class is completed students are encouraged to start a project class with coaching. Simple furniture projects help reinforce the skills and knowledge needed for successful woodworking. Coaching is offered at the evening classes and weeklong intensive sessions.

Drop-in Projects

After a student has completed a beginner’s basics class, students can rent the woodshop for 3 hour Drop-in times to work on personal projects .

Our shop is located upstairs in unit #260 of the artistically eclectic Mergatroid Buildling at 975 Vernon Drive in East Vancouver, British Columbia.

Parking: There is plenty of parking in front of the building and across the street. (signs on front of buildling saying “unauthorized vehicles will be towed” can be ignored for students).

Public Transit: The #22 bus comes within 1 block of the building near the corner of Clark and Venables. We are about a 7 minute walk from Hastings and Clark which serves many bus routes, and a 20 minute walk from the Commercial SkyTrain station.
